Republic Bank /UWI Management Challenge Winners get valuable internship opportunity

Port of Spain, Trinidad, June 8, 2022: Partnering for their third execution, Republic Bank and The University of the West Indies’ Department of Management Studies held their 2022 RBL/UWI Management Challenge on June 8, 2022.

The much-anticipated challenge was offered to final-year Business Strategy and Policy students who were tasked with examining a company's primary functional areas, scope, and strategy, and making recommendations to increase the company's long-term competitive advantage.

While four teams competed, only one team Management Achievers was awarded the opportunity for an 8-week paid internship at Republic Bank, commencing July 2022. Members of the winning team were Aliesha Liverpool, Brandon Samuel, Dena Chaitram, Iyanla Williams, Mickial Legair, Natalia Lee, Rebecca Munro, Sydney Mohan.

The sought-after internship opportunity promises to offer invaluable international experience in the financial services sector for these winners as they will gain exposure to the inner workings of core areas of the Group’s operations. Specifically, they will have the opportunity to work on strategic programs and projects in Group Marketing and Communications, Overseas Operations, Human Resources, as well as within the Bank’s branch network.

Nigel Baptiste, Managing Director at Republic Bank, in describing the rationale behind the competition concept stated, "This initiative fosters critical thinking, innovation, and creativity. Cultivating this level of practical experience will allow the students to apply their learnings to real-life organizational challenges while simultaneously honing their business expertise. Our hope is that by providing students with this opportunity, they will thrive and become the leaders of tomorrow."

Dr. Shellyanne Wilson, Head of Department, Management Studies said, "This RBL/UWI Management Challenge has taken our students beyond the limits of the classroom setting, providing them with the opportunity to make connections with academic theories and frameworks to real-world settings. And, beyond the competition, the winners of the coveted internship prize will earn valuable work experience and network with leading professionals, laying a solid foundation for their professional careers."

For both Republic Bank and UWI, the intention is that upon completion of the challenge, a new generation of students would be inspired with the capacity and confidence to achieve success as they enter and navigate the business world.
