Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, August 26, 2019: When you’re on a mission to burst cancer’s bubble, a little rain won’t stop you! Despite a mid-afternoon downpour, supporters of the fight against cancer turned out in the hundreds to support the Bubbles for Life run/walk at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy on Saturday, August 24.

As the clouds lifted, the centre-court of the Bubbles for Life sponsor’s village quickly filled up with a sea of brightly coloured t-shirts, each representing a different type of cancer. The event sought to bring awareness to breast cancer, leukemia, lung cancer, lymphoma and ovarian cancer with pink, orange, white, green and teal t-shirts respectively.

After heartfelt and motivating words of welcome from Dr Asante LeBlanc, Chairman of the Trinidad and Tobago Cancer Society, and Denyse Ramnarine, Republic Bank’s General Manager, Electronic Channels and Payments, spirits were lifted even higher by a rousing medley from Marcia Miranda – herself a cancer survivor.

Following a quick warm up, the participants made their way along the route by running, walking, dancing and even throwing themselves into the different coloured bubble stations that give Bubbles for Life its name. After completing the course, they headed back to the sponsor’s village to enjoy their choice of healthy eats from gourmet meals to yoghurt, granola bars, fruit cups and some much needed hydration.

The size and scope of Bubbles for Life belies the fact that the event is still in its infancy, having been revamped from its successor, the Walk for Life, in 2018. This year’s instalment has solidified the message that not only is Bubbles for Life here to stay but also, there is strength in the growing numbers of survivors, cancer-fighters, corporate sponsors and other advocates who continue to make Bubbles for Life the success that it is. Together they are quickly building Bubbles for Life into something of a local institution and it is their every intention to make next year’s event even bigger.
